European Permaculture
Teachers Meeting
Portugal

This project is about the process of preparation of a european permaculture teachers meeting in Portugal in march 2013.

The challenge of this project is to organize a 5 days event that would host the european teachers community involved on the development of tools and contents for the teaching of permaculture.
One vision

In this event the teachers will discuss about the past and the future of permaculture and the meanig of it nowadays.

For the meeting we will have the visit of teachers from all european countries involved on the “Teaching Permaculture in Europe. Sustainable ways of sharing knowledge” project supported by the Leonardo da Vinci program.

This event have the objective to create the space to discuss standards, course formats and curriculum and also how we can develop a stronger network.

-Crucial to develop european network

Deductive Observation
-Potential for a boost in permaculture
-Possibility for a higher level on education
-Conditions to develop higher standard in permaculture education
-Some logistics will be necessary
-Conditions to create a teachers community
-Creation of higher number of permaculturists
-Not a consistent educational system in europe
-Possible faster development of permaculture

Limiting factors

What is limiting your yield?
-The factor that limits mostly the yield is the imagination of the participants.

Were can i open more niches?
-A better promotion may create a bigger interest.

What improvements can be done?
-Live stream on internet can extend the edges.

How to extend limits and comfort zones?
-Share the results with international community

How are we organized

Design

For the design of the tasks and goals of this partnership we are using the viable systems model.
In this model we have a central system that operates as a coordination group, an communication and navigation system, a facilitation and process system, a values and identity system and also the primary activities of working groups.

Permaculture Ethics

Care for earth

This project in not directly related to landscape regeneration,

but it can create a huge impact since it works directly with

education for permaculturists in the european continent.

Care for people

Social landscapes

In this project the influence on social landscapes is related

with the education for permaculture specialists and teachers

that will share their discoveries and inspire others to follow

the same path .

Fair share

With this project we will create methods and strategies for

teaching permaculture and will share the information in a

book .

Permaculture Principles

The most frequent principles applied were:

The problem is the solution

Integrate rather than segregate

Multifunctional relations

Use local resources

Financial analysis

This project is supported by the european union, with the

budget from the leonardo da vinci program.

Quality of life

-The quality of life we have tried to achieve, is to have a good

flow of information and knowledge and at the same time to

create a harmonious environment were everybody have fun.

Evaluation

We hope that the main outcome of this project will be an increase of the quality of life of future permaculturists.

Limiting factors

What is limiting your yield?
-The factor that limits mostly the yield is the climate

Were can i open more niches?
- It would be very good to have a strong presence of portuguese teachers.

What improvements can be done?
-Make the system in a way that it can be maintained by a small number of people

How to extend limits and comfort zones?
-Having a national tecahers convergence the days after.

What would i do different?
It has been an amazing experience to be part of such an inspiring project like this one. Despite being a land person, and being outside in the land its were i feel more confortable, connecting with nature, i get an amazing input of inspiration by being involved in such an adventure.
I belive that what i would do different would be to try to go more into detail of the processess, there are some limitations since we are going to use open space, and will try to integrate as much as possible participants needs and wants, so that we move in an organic flow.

Final observations

This is the most important project ive ever been involved in and the one that can create a bigger impact, since its area of action is the hole europe and possibly the hole world.
The portuguese meeting will be one of the highest points on the process because we will be discussing the curriculum and the standards of permaculture education.
By being involved in such a project and bringing it to Portugal i belive we gave a huge step on taking the portuguese permaculture community to the same level and compreention as the rest of the european countries and i am sure we have an amazing experience to share with our fellow partners about how and why permaculture has developed so fast in this corner of europe.
