Diploma System
Portugal
"River of Life" presentation
by diploma students

After 15 years since the arrival of the permaculture science in Portugal, it came the moment to develop the portuguese diploma system.

This project has been developed with the help of Lesley Martin, that for many years was the only permaculture teacher in Portugal and has been tutoring me on my diploma.

These are important moments when we can announce the development of a diploma system adapted to the portuguese conditions and opportunities.

"For a green future"

Our main goals are to develop a user friendly system that would be cheap and with a low energy footprint and that at the same time would keep a very high standard of quality.

For the develop of such a system we based ourselves on the british permaculture experience and also on other 13 institutions around Europe and the world.

In this process we have developed the permaculture academy which is currently being hosted by the Vale da Lama permaculture institute.

O.B.R.E.D.I.M.@Teachers trainning course

For the design process of this projects the students can use the O.B.R.E.D.I.M.C.E. as main framework, it is  based on the O.B.R.E.D.I.M. tool to witch i extended the C. and E.

O.B.R.E.D.I.M.C.E. is a mnemonic that stands for Observation, Boundaries, Resources, Evaluation, Design, Implementation, Maintenance, Celebration and Evaluation again.

Ive added the C. that stands for celebration, because i found a critical importance on celebrating and taking some time to rejubilate with the achievements, and i also added another E. for another evaluation, so that the evaluation keeps happening several times along the process, to make it even more holistic and so that the spirit is not lost between the letters, and also so that the people never forget to celebrate and appreciate their inside and outside regenerations .

The process will move on without stopping, after getting to the final E. of evaluation we should go back again to the beginning to improve it or try new updates and then implement the new ideas, maintain them and to celebrate , as a spiral that repeats the pattern...

Glossary

D.A.F.O.R.
Ive also used the D.A.F.O.R. Framework in my designs, in many different moments, is used as an evaluation tool, and its a mnemonic, that stands for Dominant, Abundant, Frequent, Occasional, Rare and that can be used to classify the patterns of presence of specific resources like vegetation.

The scale of permanence
Its also possible to use P.A. Yeomans scale of permanence to get to know limiting factors for design, a tool that can be used to find priorities for the regeneration.
Its very important when designing to consider how we can use resources to best effect, and how we can get it to perform as many functions as possible before they leave the site, so that we can achieve energy efficiency and self resiliency.

Design

The Portuguese Diploma Process
The portuguese diploma system was developed to be of low input with a small footprint, it must also be and self maintaining as much as possible so of the process can produce as much as possible with minimum management.

To make it as cheap and efficient as possible we looked into having all the information online to reduce the need for questions and answers from the diploma students.

European Permaculture Convergence

Standards
One of the most discussed aspect related to permaculture all over the world, is the teaching quality standards.
By being a self regulating science with no formal central structure, there is no control as such and that reminds me of one of the questions I did to Bill Mollison one day.

Q :What is your dream for the future of Permaculture?
A: All I ever dreamed for permaculture was that it would lose my control...and it has...so I dont have dreams for the future of it.

Specializations
In the diploma certificate there will be described what is the specialization of the diploma holder according to his experience with projects development.
Because permacultursits are very multifunctional people, each permaculturist can have 2 or 3 specializations if they can show that they have the skills .

This are the specialists we expect to find

Teaching
Horticulture
Bio constuction
Project management
Marketing / Networking
Community / Transition
Urban design
Forest management

Design projects requirements
For the students to receive their diploma they must complete

10 designs representing their experience of a 2 years period.

For the 10 designs they will receive points per project and

they need 80 points to pass, and the maximum they can get

is 100 points.

At least 5 of the projects must have been implemented and

at least 1 must be about networking and social aspects.

Training requirements

Beside the 10 projects the students must also show their

practical experience and they will also receive points for that.

They need 70 points and the maximum they can get is 100.

The trainning experience is represented by the workshops,

courses, meetings or events that they have been part of, or

developments they have made in permaculture projects.

The portuguese permaculture community will try to provide

specific courses to support the quality of the training for

diploma students.

For minimum 5 days specialization course the students get

10 points per course or per demonstrated working

experience.

There are also 10 and 5 points courses according to level of

the learning and working experience.

For the working experience the students can get maximum

100 points and minimum 70 to pass.

In total the diploma student need to get at least 150 points to be recognized as a diploma holder by the portuguese system.

Not many meetings needed

The process
The process starts with a meeting with other people interested and with the coordination of a tutor that will explain the process, this meeting is free of charge and has the function of clarifying and presenting the process to permaculturists.

For the students interested in moving forward the next step of the process is for the student to sent by internet a project or more to the tutor and have a online assessment.

Its important at this stage that the student starts looking for courses or activities were he can get the working experience points and start that process at the same time as the design projects.

This also the moment for the student to start developing and publishing the diploma online so that other permaculturists can learn from the experience and also the tutor can see at any moment the stages of development.
(This is not obligatory, but there is an extreme importance on sharing the achivements with the permaculture community)

Then there is the first personal meeting were the tutor will have a look at 5 or more projects designed by the students and feedback on what can be improved.

The next step is the second virtual assessment to present 7 or more projects for the tutor to help on adjustment of parts that need deeper development.

We get then to the final assessment with two tutors to adjust the final details of the projects and experience and to prepare the final presentation.

Moment for the final presentation in a opened event for the permaculture community and for the celebration of the achievements.

The total price for this experience is 275 euros that will go to the maintenance of the academy hosting the process and for the tutor input.

Permaculture Ethics

Care for earth

This project in not directly related to landscape regeneration,

but it can create a huge impact since it works directly with

education for permaculturists.

Care for people

Social landscapes

In this project the influence on social landscapes is related

with the training of specialists and teachers that will share

their discoveries and inspire others to follow the same path .

Fair share

One of the cheapest diplomas in the world, that provides a

highly experienced permaculturist to promote the principle of

fair share.

Permaculture Principles

The most frequent principles applied were:

The problem is the solution

Integrate rather than segregate

Start small

Use local resources

Financial analysis

Not a very high investment

Most of the work has been done by other more experienced

organizations

Work can be done by one volunteers answering the emails

and sending information that is not online.

Quality of life

-The quality of life we have tried to achieve, despite the

limiting boundaries, was to have a good flow of diploma

students so that then they can also become tutors.

What would i do different?

One day we would like to have a diploma process for free, that could be financed by other ways, so that even people without any money could be fully integrated.

In our system a student with no finantial resources can also make an exchange with the teacher for work or materials acording to the needs.

Final observations

The implementation of this project its an old dream for many permaculturists in Portugal. Following the principle of starting small we have came to the point when we have gathered all the resources required and can confidently move to the next steps of implementation.

The main purpose of this project is that more experienced permaculturists can share their achievements with the community and with the ones that are closer to the beginning of their permaculture river of life.

I hope that this system will provide a good opportunity for the portuguese permaculturists to move forward in their education as teachers or consultants and that they can also in the future share the discoveries they have made along this process.

One of the main objectives for the implementation of this project is to create a stronger educational and social network of permaculturists and an example that can be used by other countries.

This project is dedicated to all the permaculturists in Portugal, that until this moment were most of them inspired and inspiring pioneers species.
